One of Maui's most popular activities is the boat trip to Molokini islet, a volcanic crater about three miles off the Makena coast. Excellent snorkeling with crystal-clear water is the main attraction. This photo shows the backside of the crater.

Humpback whales make their winter home in the waters off Maui (generally mid-December through April). Visitors can see the whales from the shore or a whale watching boat. In this sequence, an 80,000 lb. Humpback is seen breaching off south Maui.
About halfway to Hana is the Wailua valley. This area resembles the Hawaii of a hundred years ago. The residents here still grow taro in flooded fields as their ancestors did.
Makena's Big Beach (Oneloa Beach) typifies Maui's famous beaches, with a wide expanse of white sand and turquoise water.

There are numerous waterfalls to see along the road to Hana, such as Wailua falls, left, just
past Hana. In some spots, the road to Hana becomes a one-lane, winding path surrounded by lush vegetation, right.

Central Maui's north shore is shown from Ho'okipa beach, famous for windsurfing. Wailuku and the West Maui Mountains are in the background.

The island of Molokai is seen from pineapple fields on Maui's northwest coast.
